'Bigfoot' may have been used for the first time to describe hairy, manlike monsters in the late 1950s, but that certainly wasn't the first time such creatures were reported to haunt the North American landscape. Reports of hairy wild men, 'gorillas' in the woods, and strange apelike beasts can be found in books and newspapers back to the late 1700s. (And that's not counting Native American traditions.) This collection surveys accounts of Bigfoot-like creatures from this historical period, while taking note of the many ways false reports may enter the literature (misidentifications, hoaxes, rumors, escaped exotics, etc.).
